Curriculum & Math Activities
Fraction Hopscotch
Fraction Jump
Call out a fraction, and students must identify the corresponding section and jump onto it. For example, if you call out "1/4," students jump onto the section labeled "1/4." Increase the difficulty by calling out fractions in mixed numbers or requiring students to identify equivalent fractions.
Equivalent Fraction Match
Assign each hopscotch section a fraction, such as 1/2, 1/3, 2/4, etc. Scatter fraction cards with equivalent fractions around the hopscotch grid. Students take turns hopping on a fraction section and then finding and matching an equivalent fraction card. The goal is to match as many equivalent fractions as possible within a time limit.
Fraction Relay Race
Divide students into teams and assign each team a starting point on the hopscotch grid. Each team member takes turns hopping from the beginning to end, with the goal of completing a the entire hopscotch while verbally saying the fraction while hopping on them. When one student finishes the sequence, they tag the next student to complete the hopscotch while saying the fractions. The team that finishes first wins.
Fraction Addition & Subtraction
Students hop from one section to another, performing the addition operation on the fractions as they move along. For instance, if they start on 1/8 with addition, they might hop to 1/8 + 2/8, then hop to 3/8. Or for subtraction, they might start at 4/8, hope to 1/8, and then hop to 3/8 as the solution. See how many different addition and subtraction operations and solutions they can find.
Forward and Backward Fractions
Students complete the hopscotch by hopping on each fraction and calling it out as they jump. When they arrive at 1 whole, they then hop in reverse and go backwards while calling at each fraction until the student arrives at 0. For example, the student could say 0, 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, one whole, and then backwards, one whole, 7/8, 3/4, 5/8, 1/2, 3/8, 2/8, 1/8, and finally 0.
