Curriculum & Math Activities
Giant Shapes Circle
Shape Matching Relay
Divide students into teams and assign each team a starting point on the Giant Shapes Circle. Place a set of shape cards or flashcards with corresponding shapes at the opposite end of the blacktop. Students take turns running to the shape cards, finding the matching shape on the Giant Shapes Circle, and returning to tag their teammate. The team that completes the relay first wins!
Shape Scavenger Hunt
Hide shape cards or objects with specific shapes around the blacktop area. Provide students with a list of shapes they need to find and match to the Giant Shapes Circle. Encourage them to move around the blacktop, using their spatial intelligence to locate and identify the hidden shapes. The first student or team to find all the shapes wins the scavenger hunt!
Shape Simon Says
Play a variation of the classic game "Simon Says" using the Giant Shapes Circle. Designate one student as "Simon" and have them give shape-related commands such as "Simon says, step on a triangle" or "Simon says, hop to a circle." Students must listen carefully and move to the correct shape on the Giant Shapes Circle. Anyone who moves to the wrong shape is out. The last student remaining becomes the next "Simon."
Shape Math Relay
Assign each shape on the Giant Shapes Circle a specific numerical value. Divide students into teams and provide them with a set of math problems involving shapes and their corresponding values. One student from each team solves a problem and runs to the Giant Shapes Circle to stand on the shape with the correct value. The team with the correct answer and shape wins the point. Continue until all the math problems have been solved.
Shape Clues
Have students gather in the center of the circle. Say one or multiple shape clues and students have to quickly move and stand on a shape that matches the clues. For example, the teacher could say, "triangle", and the students would need to find a triangle and stand on it. Or, "polygon", and students would need to find a polygon. Any student who doesn't stand on their own shape, is out, and goes outside of the circle and waits for the next round. The game is played until there are 1 or 2 remaining students.
