Curriculum & Math Activities

Math Calculator
Number Hunt
Students are assigned in teams of 2-4 students and are given a target number (e.g. 10, 25, 48, 120, etc.), pencil, and paper to record their math equations. One student is the scribe while the other student/s on the team take turns figuring out and hopping out equations that equal the target number. For example, if the target number is 20, students might jump on the numbers and say 5x4=20, 7+7+6=20, 5+5+5+5=20, 10+10=20, and so on. Students should hop on numbers and operators and say the equation aloud while teammates confirm accuracy. The team continues for a set amount of time (3-5 minutes recommended) and then counts the total number of equations that they came up with that equal the target number.

Math Fact Relay

Divide students into teams and have them line up about 10 feet away from a stencil, perhaps behind a pair of cones or markers. Students are provided with a series of math facts (without answers). When the game begins, the first student runs to the MathTop calculator, solves the problem, and then runs back to the team and tags the next person in line. The team that completes all the problems first wins.

Math Facts Simon Says
In this game, a leader calls out math problems and students have to solve the problem and touch the correct numbers on the stencil. For example, the leader would say "Simon says 5+4=" and the leader would call on a student to solve the problem. The choosen student would say while hopping on the math stencil, "5+4=9". The first student gets 3 correct answers in a row, becomes the leader.

Math Facts Blitz
Students are given one or more math fact sets to hop out as quickly as possible. Based on student needs and what they are working on, students may be asked to solve and hop out their 3s, 6s, 7s, or other multiplication facts, a certain set of division facts, or addition or subtraction facts. Students take turns hoping out and practicing their math facts set. The other students watch for accuracy and give feedback and support. Once one student finishes their set of math facts, the students rotate and another student hops and solves their math facts set. It is recommended for students to do multiple rounds of math facts practice.
